Santa Fe, NM, dentist office Alpine Laser Dental knows that damaged teeth are no joke. Not only do they mar your otherwise lovely smile, but they are painful and can turn daily activities like eating, talking, laughing, and even smiling into a chore.
Regardless of the reason behind the damage, you deserve to have a complete, comfortable, and attractive smile. People in Santa Fe, NM, and Los Alamos, NM, need to know that Crowns are one of our most versatile restoration options and today’s crowns are designed to look completely natural so that they blend in beautifully with the rest of your teeth. One of our goals at Alpine Laser Dental is to have people notice your smile—not your dental work! Beautiful, custom-made crowns are one of the key ways that we can do this.
What Is a Crown?
A crown is a tooth-shaped shell of porcelain that is designed to fit right over the top of your own tooth all the way down to the gum line. You may have also heard crown referred to as “caps” since they act like covers.
In the past, crowns were made of metal. You might remember seeing silver teeth in the smiles of your older relatives and depending on your age, you might have a silver crown yourself. Today’s crowns, however, are made using newer techniques and the crowns are so lifelike that once they are placed, they typically can’t be distinguished from natural teeth. And that’s just the way we like it!
Why Would We Use a Crown?
We can use crowns to solve an incredible range of common dental problems. For instance, we might use a crown to:
- Repair a tooth that is cracked or broken
- Build up a tooth that is eroded
- Protect a tooth that is fragile or weakened by root canal therapy
- Conceal a tooth that is unusually shaped or severely discolored
- Widen a tooth that is small
- Replace a tooth that has been lost as part of a dental implant system
As you can see, the sky is pretty much the limit!
Is It Hard to Get a Crown?
Getting crowns at the Santa Fe, NM or the Los Alamos, NM, dental office of Alpine Laser Dental is a simple process. Once you and Dr. Brookover determine that a crown is the right treatment for your concern, we’ll numb your tooth and then shape it for the crown. This is done to remove the damaged areas so you can have a fresh start and also to make sure that the crown will fit properly between your other teeth. We’ll take impressions and photos. These will be sent, along with Dr. Brookover’s specific instructions, to a lab we trust to create our restorations. We’ll place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it since it will probably be sensitive.
As soon as your crown comes back from the lab, we’ll call you up so that you can return to our office. You and Dr. Dr. Brookover will check the fit of the crown and, if you are both happy, your crown will be bonded into place. One last check will be made for proper fit, then you will be on your way!
